Saleemul Huq, a pioneering climate scientist from Bangladesh who pushed to get the world to understand, pay for and adapt to worsening warming impacts on poorer nations, died of cardiac arrest Saturday. “Saleem always focused on the poor and marginalized, making sure that climate change was about people, their lives, health and livelihoods,” said University of Washington climate and health scientist Kristie Ebi, a friend of Huq’s. Huq, who died in Dhaka, directed and helped found the International Centre for Climate Change and Development there. He was an early force for community-based efforts to adapt to what climate change did to poor nations. United Nations climate negotiators last year approved the creation of that fund, but efforts to get it going further have so far stalled.

NEW YORK (AP) — Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr.'s alleged attack on his girlfriend at a New York City hotel left the woman with a fractured neck vertebrae and a cut above her right eye, prosecutors revealed at his arraignment Tuesday. Porter, 23, is charged with felony assault and strangulation in connection with the incident Monday at the Millennium Hilton near the United Nations in Manhattan. Hospital testing showed that the woman, 26, sustained a fractured vertebrae in her neck, the criminal complaint said. In April 2021, the NBA fined Porter $50,000 for violating the league’s COVID-19 health and safety rules by visiting a Miami strip club. South Dakota regulators on Wednesday denied a construction permit for a carbon dioxide pipeline project, one month after a North Dakota panel did the same to a similar project by another company. The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission voted unanimously to deny Navigator's application for its Heartland Greenway pipeline. The proposed South Dakota route encompassed 112 miles (180 kilometers) and would serve three ethanol plants. Other states continue to weigh Summit's project, which would encompass a 2,000-mile network from 30-some ethanol plants throughout Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota to an underground storage site in North Dakota. Summit this week withdrew its applications to Oliver County for two permits related to construction of injection wells for its underground CO2 storage site in central North Dakota.

The heat wave in Texas has offered little reprieve. Heat at night disrupts sleep and prevents the body from recovering and cooling down, making minimum temperatures a critical indicator of a heat wave's severity, experts said. Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon said temperatures during this heat wave in the state have threatened records at both ends of the spectrum — including maximums and minimums — in its urban centers. Ebi said the high nighttime temperatures and the prolonged nature of the Texas heat wave are particularly concerning. "A very small percentage of death certificates during a heat wave put down, 'heat' as an underlying cause," Ebi, who studies heat deaths, adding that about half of excess deaths, on average, are from cardiovascular diseases.

If the planet got an annual check-up like a person, scientists say Earth is "really quite sick right now." Only air pollution wasn't quite at the danger point globally. About two-thirds of Earth don't meet the criteria for freshwater safety, scientists said as an example. Taipei CNN —The number of companies in Taiwan saying they’re experiencing business disruptions due to rising tensions between Taipei and Beijing has almost doubled, according to the American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan. An annual survey, which polled 214 member firms in Taiwan, showed that the number of companies reporting “significant disruption” rose from 17% to 33% between August and December 2022, the chamber said Tuesday. China’s ruling Communist Party has increasingly exerted its territorial claims over democratic Taiwan, a self-governing island, despite having never controlled it. Almost half of the companies that the chamber surveyed said they’re developing contingency plans in response to the heightened tension. “For companies in Taiwan, cross-strait relations are very important,” Kristie Hsu, a director at Taiwan’s Chung-Hua Institution of Economic Research, told CNN.

The state's population has been steadily increasing for decades. But some that have moved to Florida will come to regret the decision — and may ultimately move out. A nearly 14,000-member Facebook group for people moving out of Florida has cited severe weather, low wages, crowded beaches, changing politics, and steep housing prices as reasons people left. WASHINGTON, Dec 22 (Reuters) - The population of the United States accelerated in 2022 from its slowest rate on record, driven by net international immigration, as growth began to recover from a slowdown triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau said on Thursday. That compared with net migration of more than 376,000 the previous year, signaling a potential return to pre-pandemic levels. Florida was the fastest-growing state in 2022, with an population increase of 1.9% to about 22.2 million, the Census Bureau figures showed. Eighteen states experienced a population decline in 2022, compared to 15 and the District of Columbia the prior year. Declining populations in both states reflected net migration to other states.
